Graphic Novel RECOMMENDATIONS

So last year I decided it was time I got into graphic novels. I’d been looking at certain titles for years, flicking through them every time I went into a bookstore, but never got around to buying any. I’m not sure why it took me sooo long, but since reading my first one at the beginning of last year, I have been picking them up ever since. Although I haven’t exactly read a vast amount (yet!), I’ve extremely enjoyed many of the ones I have, and so I thought I would share with you a few that I would recommend!

1. Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

This has to be one of my absolute favourites. I cannot count how many times Nimona had me laughing out loud (I had the smart idea to read this on a train journey, and just could not hold it in). It is a wonderfully quirky graphic novel, filled with humour, adventure, top-notch characters, adorableness and brilliant artwork. If you’re into wacky but awesome plots with super-villains, science and dragons and are looking for a fun read, Nimona is the perfect choice! ★★★★☆

2. Saga by  Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples (Artist)

The first thing I have to say about Saga is, it is the most bizarre thing I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Just when you think things are weird, it gets a whole lot weirder. But it so works, and it is so fantastic. With so much depth underlying the brilliant intertwining plot lines and themes, outstanding character development and gorgeous artwork, I can not recommend these comics enough. It’s epic, heartbreaking, hilarious and sexy all at the same time. ★★★★½

4. Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons

There is a reason Watchmen is considered the greatest graphic novel of all time. It is a masterpiece. If I could name all the reasons why you should read this, we would be here a long time. So I’ll keep it short. Read Watchmen. ★★★★☆

4. Rat Queens by Kurtis J. Weibe

When the description reads ‘A pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, and they’re in the business of killing all god’s creatures for profit’, expect exactly that! What stands out about these comics are the relationships and dynamics between a kick-ass cast of female characters. They all have strong, clear distinct voices and personalities, and it’s hard not to love them. Rat Queens is incredibly fun and addictive, and I’m so looking forward to getting my hands on Volume 3! ★★★★☆

5. The New Ghost by Robert Hunter

24 pages of hauntingly stunning art and an atmospheric heart-warming story. The New Ghost follows the story of a ghost on his first day. It’s a little gem of a graphic novel and although a very quick read, manages to effortlessly accomplish lots in a short amount of time. I loved this to pieces and I know I will re-read this for many times to come. ★★★★☆

For me, I love getting lost in a graphic novel in times where I don’t quite feel like starting a new book. I find it amazing how visual storytelling and narratives can be just as strong, if not stronger, through illustrations and art work than just by writing.
